Toga Party

Toga parties are great fun because of their inherent silliness.  Who can be in a bad mood when they are covered with draping fabric?!  It also helps make the whole what-do-I-wear thing easier.  For how to make a toga, please see my links, there is a GREAT website devoted to the toga.

When planning an atmosphere of Ancient Greece (or Animal House), think of great Greek food...black olives, grapes, feta cheese, spanakopita, gyros, Greek chicken, etc.  Don't forget the wine and baklava! Use your imagination! (This is also easily catered.)

For decorating...take a trip to Michaels (craft store)...you'll find plenty of foliage to wrap around tables (and heads).  You can find table fountains for cheap...add that to a display table.  Thrift stores have a great selection of drinkware...see what you can find for goblets...or find a perfect one for yourself and ask your guests to bring their own as part of the fun.

And of course...

HIRE A BELLY DANCER!

 Arabian Nights

Nothing says exotic more than 1001 nights and the tales of Scheherazade.  This party needs dim lighting and lots of candles!

For food ideas, shish kebobs are great, hummus and baba ganoush with pita bread, Moroccan chicken, and baklava works here, too.

Hookah's are an awesome addition to an Arabian Nights party and even non-smokers have been known to try smoking the fruity tobacco.  You can find hookah's on-line or if you live in a big city, you may be able to rent them.  Practice using the hookah and always exercise great care...they get hot.

For decorating, try going to fabric stores and checking out all the discontinued and discounted fabrics...look for dark, jeweled tones and whatever you do, don't try to match!  Go for splashes of color all over...layer materials over tables.  Try thrift stores for cheap candle holders and buy a mismatched set...and if you can find Aladdin's magic oil lamp, pick it up, too!

And, of course...

HIRE A BELLY DANCER!

Party Ideas

   So You're Planning a Party...

Parties are fun, especially if you are the guest.  Planning a party, however,  can be stressful.  Here are a few tips on theme parties that can assist you in your planning.  Remember...the best parties are not the best because of elaborate planning, they are fun because of the people we invite and how we interact with one another.

So, keep it simple and keep your focus on the ultimate goal....FUN!

  Music

Tastes in music are pretty diverse, so when choosing music, take the time to check out Amazon.com, Borders, or Barnes & Noble and listen to some tracks before you buy.  Before being able to sample music, I've ended up with some dog CD's!  But here are some of my recommendations:

   Greek:
Putomayo Presents Greece:  A Musical Odyssey, Mondo Greece, Rough Guide to Music of Greece, Rough Guide to Rebetika, Live in the Mix with DJ Chris "The Greek" Panaghi (heavy dance beat music).

   Arabic:
The Orient Beats Back:  1001 Arabian Nights (heavy dance beat music), Arabica I and Arabica II, Desert Roses and Arabian Rhythms, Putomayao Presents:  Arabic Groove.

   Names

Another fun idea is to buy name tags and dub each guest with a new, themed name when they arrive.  The Greek names come primarily from mythology.  Personally, when I host a party, I dub myself Aphrodite...hosting has its privileges!  The Arabic names all have meanings, so name each friend appropriately.  It gives guests something fun and interesting to discuss, as well...what their name means and perhaps a story as to why.
